Connor Hood/University of Alberta - Oilers Call On U Of A Student As Emergency Backup

The Oilers will have a new face on the bench tonight.

As Stuart Skinner and his wife Chloe welcome their second son into the world today, the Oilers are calling on Tyler Palmer to take Skinner's place as their Emergency Backup Goalie tonight against the Seattle Kraken.

Palmer, 21, is in his first year with the University of Alberta Golden Bears after spending three seasons in the WHL with the Victoria Royals and Everett Silvertips. The native of Fernie, British Columbia, also spent parts of two seasons with the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL.

Palmer has been a standout for the U of A, boasting USports' fourth-lowest GAA (2.08) and tenth-highest save percentage (.916) to go with a 10-3 record for the division-leading Golden Bears.

Palmer's signing comes almost two years to the day since the last time the Oilers used an EBUG. On January 28th, 2023, Edmonton-born U of A goalie Matt Berlin was called on to replace a sick Stuart Skinner.

With the Oilers holding a late 7-3 lead over Chicago, head coach Jay Woodcroft tapped Berlin to replace Jack Campbell for the final two and a half minutes of the game. Berlin stopped the only shot he faced, cementing himself as one of 21 goalies in NHL history with a save percentage of 1.000.

Palmer and the Oilers take on the Seattle Kraken at 7:30 MT.
