Three trade proposals that the Oilers would never offer the Jets, but the Jets would be crazy to not accept.
An elite goaltender can make or break a team in the playoffs. Goaltending was only one portion of the equation that led to an early exit from the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers. While the blame doesn't soley fall on the shoulders of Stuart Skinner, he started every game in the playoffs. As a rookie he could have used a game or two off to help him stay adequately rested.

Connor Hellebuyck is no stranger to playing with minimal rest. In four of his eight seasons he has played more than 60 games for the Winnipeg Jets. In each of those seasons his save percentage (SV%) has been .924, .913, .910, and .920. He is an elite goalie who can turn a great team into a Stanley Cup favorite. In 2020 he won the Vezina Trophy for top goaltender in the NHL. He is also one of the three finalists for this year's Vezina alongside Linus Ullmark and Ilya Sorokin.

It's highly unlikely that the Oilers make a trade for Hellebuyck. But just for fun, let's look at three crazy proposals that would allow the Oilers to potentially acquire him.
*Please note, this is all speculation.
In any deal for Hellebuyck the most obvious return piece is one of Jack Campbell or Skinner. In this proposal the Oilers would send Campbell, Philip Broberg and their 2024 1st round draft pick for Hellebuyck. The money is pretty close to even and the value favors the Jets in this scenario. In reality, this proposal isn't that crazy.
A package featuring Calder Trophy Finalist Skinner, their top forward prospect Xavier Bourgault and the current point man on the power play Evan Bouchard would be crazy. Skinner is only 24, Bouchard is 23 and Bourgault is 20 with one AHL season under his belt.

The Jets would be crazy to say no to this package. Skinner and Bouchard can greatly help a competing team despite their youth. Bourgault just registered 34 points in 62 games in his first AHL season. Would the Oilers ever make this trade? No, I don't believe they would. Their goaltending would get better but then there would be a massive hole on defence.
The ultimate cap dump trade would be sending Campbell and Darnell Nurse to the Jets for Hellebuyck. Nurse and Campbell make a combined $14.25M. If clearing cap space mattered more than anything else, this is the deal they would make. There is no chance in heaven, hell or earth that they make this trade. Nurse is too important a piece on the Oilers defence. Whatever warts are in his game are far outweighed by his hard work, speed, grit and even strength point production. Campbell had a historically bad year by his standards. He will be closer to his career average next year and should be considered part of the Oilers future.

What do you think of these trade proposals? Are they too crazy for you? Are there any that you would actually consider executing? I don't think the Oilers make any of these deals based on the pieces they would give up, but crazier things have happened.
