Philip Broberg should be playing top four minutes in the AHL or NHL. The Edmonton Oilers don't have any big name free agents at the end of this season. Once July 1st rolls around, they will be able to ink Leon Draisaitl to a contract extension. The extension will be an eight-year $11.5-million cap hit deal. Good for Nylander to ink a lucrative deal while still in his prime. From my vantage point he appears to be a very underrated player for the Maple Leafs who is finally getting his due. Unfortunately for the Oilers, it potentially means a world of hurt (financially) when Draisaitl needs a new contract. WILLIAM NYLANDER DESERVES A RAISE, BUT SO DOES DRAISAITL Nylander's in the last year that will pay him $6.962-million. That's approximately a $4.5-million raise per year. William Nylander. In 2018-19 - the first year of this expiring contract - Nylander had a massively disappointing year. He only accumulated 27 points in 54 games. He had a career-best season last year with 87 points in 82 games. This year he's on pace for 120 points - which would obliterate his totals from last year. Draisaitl is coming off back-to-back 50+ goal seasons. In those seasons he collected 110 and 128 points. He's currently making $8.5-million a season. There's a general guideline that a valuable contract is $1-million per 10 points a season. If that's the case, Nylander's extension should have been in the $8-9-million range given his production over the past two years and this year. Granted, he is on a 120 point pace. That's the key word though, pace. He hasn't even hit 100 points in his career. DRAISAITL DESERVES NYLANDER'S CONTRACT If we use the guideline I outlined above on Draisaitl, his extension should be worth about $11.5-12-million. Essentially, the same deal as Nylander. Now that Nylander signed that deal, there's a good chance that Draisaitl could ask for more - and he can cite Nylander's deal as the reason why he deserves more. Over their careers Draisaitl has a much higher points per game pace than Nylander. Nylander is at 0.87 points per game, while "The German Gretzky" is at 1.17. No matter how you slice it, Draisaitl is going to have a Brinks truck backed up to his front door because of Nylander. That's great for the two players, but bad for the Oilers salary cap situation.
