As noted in a prior column, the Eastern and Western Conferences are extremely tight. Only Colorado has cushion in their lead, but the other teams are bunched in the standings. The three-point game has impacted pennant races, which is why many prefer a 3-2-1 format to create separation and spread.
Winnipeg was cruising relatively high prior to the loss of Connor Hellebuyck. Eric Comrie won his first start in place of Helly on November 18, though no one knew at the time Hellebuyck was about to have surgery and be lost for 4-6 weeks. Since that announcement, Comrie and the Jets are 0-3 and have fallen out of playoff position.
The Jets could turn to the untested Thomas Milic if Comrie proves incapable of running with the job. Winnipeg is in slight danger of falling further behind, adding to the pressure on Helly when he returns. Not at is well north of the border in Manitoba.
