An interesting Florida Panthers-related anniversary passed by over the weekend.

It’s one that deserves a little attention, being that not only is it a fond memory for Panthers fans, but it’s also part of NHL history.

It was back on Dec. 16, 2014, on a night when Florida was hosting the Washington Capitals, that the Panthers would win the longest shootout the league has ever seen.

That thing went 20 rounds.

We had players shooting multiple times.

Those of us who were in the then-BB&T Center surely remember the night well, feeling shocked when players who had no business taking turns in a shootout were putting the puck in the net, and the way the place exploded when Nick Bjugstad scored the winner.

What made the shootout so amazing wasn’t just the ridiculous length, but the drama that came with it.

Five times the Capitals scored, putting the Panthers in a do-or-die situation, and each time Florida answered the bell.
