Lomberg's brand of gritty, skilled hockey should suit Florida will during the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Being consistent as a hockey player is an invaluable asset.
Bringing the same level of effort and intensity, game in and game out, is not easy.
For a player like Ryan Lomberg, whose game is predicated on giving 110% and going full speed every second of every shift, having the same concentrated effort on a consistent basis would seem like a near impossible feat to accomplish.
Yet here he is, having the best season of his career.
Lomberg played in all 82 regular season games for the Panthers.
Once thought of as a high-energy, fourth line, healthy scratch candidate, the 28-year-old in his third season with the Panthers has carved out quite the role for himself.
“It’s a big accomplishment,” Lomberg said during a candid chat with THN. “I’m very fortunate to have the trust of the coaching staff and management to put me in that position.”
Not only has Lomberg become an everyday player, but he’s also being counted on to play more minutes and in bigger situations than ever before in his career.
Over the past three months, Lomberg has seen his time on ice steadily increase to nearly 15 minutes per game.
He has been a mainstay on Florida’s third line, providing his special blend of speed, skill and grit on a team that has badly quality in its needed depth since losing Sam Bennett to injury.
“He's a top nine guy for the Florida Panthers right now,” said Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice. “Not by default, but because of what he brings.”
The consistency is key for Lomberg, in every element of his game.
He’s got to be the gritty guy that defends his teammates without hesitation while still contributing to the line’s offensive output without becoming a detriment in his own zone.
It’s an incredibly difficult line to walk, but Lomberg has put in the effort to be that steady and stable, night after night.
“I think the important thing is to continue to get better each and every day, and not just from season to season,” he said. “It's always about getting better and doing things to evolve and make sure you have more and more of a positive impact.”
The style of play that Lomberg excels at providing will come at a premium during the postseason.
High-energy shifts and big hits are things that can impact the momentum of a playoff game.
Lomberg is well aware that this time of year is built for his kind of game.
“I'm excited,” he said. “I'm already sleeping a little bit less just thinking about getting out there and flying around and helping the team win as best as I can.”
