Deputy threatened Brunette ‘If you f-ing fight me, you're gonna f-ing regret it’ as he put handcuffs on him
Police body camera footage showing the arrest of former Florida Panthers head coach Andrew Brunette has been released.
The video, obtained by Fox Sports 640 host Andy Slater, shows Brunette being pulled over by Broward Sheriff's Office deputies on Feb. 1.
Brunette was driving in a recreational golf cart with his wife after leaving a bar in Deerfield Beach, not far from their home.
According to an arrest report, the situation started because the golf cart was illegally parked outside of the bar, which is located on the 200 block of Northeast 21st Avenue.
Brunette was cited for the illegal parking, and deputies wrote in an arrest form they felt the 49-year-old's speech was slurred and that he was unsteady on his feet.
The deputies waited outside the bar and less than 20 minutes later, they said they observed Brunette leave the area in his golf cart.
In the body cam video, deputies observe Brunette fail to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, which is what initiated the traffic stop.
The video shows Brunette trying to give deputies his wife's driver's license instead of his own, saying he didn't have his wallet with him.
After attempting to walk away during a field sobriety test, Brunette was placed into handcuffs.
At one point, as Brunette appeared to push away from the deputies, one can be heard saying to him, "If you f-ing fight me, you're gonna f-ing regret it."
Moments later, with Brunette now in handcuffs, he can be heard asking, "Are we really doing this? I'm just trying to go home, like a block away."
Toward the end of the video, Brunette says to one of the deputies, "You know I coached the Florida Panthers? I was coaching them."
When the deputy responded, "Yeah?" Brunette looked at him and said "Yeah, you don't care," to which the deputy replied, "No."
Brunette was taken to the Broward County Main Jail where he bonded out several hours later.
According to Slater, Brunette’s attorney, Eric Schwartzreich, said his client was not drunk or impaired and that they “look forward to Mr. Brunette being vindicated of this accusation.”
Last season, Brunette led the Panthers to the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's top regular season team.
Florida elected not to retain Brunette as head coach, instead hiring Paul Maurice during the offseason.
Brunette has been an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils this season.
