The Los Angeles Kings took care of business on home ice and re-entered the win column on Saturday night with a complete 60-minute effort in a 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings.
The Kings set the tone in the first period, heavily outplaying Detroit in virtually every meaningful metric. Heading into the intermission, LA led in shots (15-5), scoring chances (16-9), high danger chances (8-0), and expected goals (1.84-0.23). They also led in the most important aspect of all - the scoreboard, thanks to two late first period goals.
Mikey Anderson started things off at 18:05 of the first. The defenseman took a neat pass at the blueline from Phillip Danaut and began toward the Detroit net where he caught former King Cam Talbot leaning to the far post. Anderson sent one between Talbot’s pads to put the Kings up 1-0.
Just 22 seconds later, the Kings made it 2-0 on Tanner Jeannot’s 2nd of the season, set up beautifully by Trevor Lewis on an outnumbered attack. The play was started by a key shot block from rookie Samuel Helenius, which set up the 2-on-1. LA blocked a total of 13 shots in the period.
While there was no scoring in the second period, the Kings didn’t relinquish control of the game. They outshot the Red Wings 14-5 in the frame, and doubled up on them in shot attempts.
In the third period, it only took the Kings 15 seconds to get the crucial insurance goal. Adrian Kempe collected his 8th of the season after Warren Foegele sprung him for a breakaway with a picture-perfect one touch saucer pass.
With the extra attacker on, the Red Wings tried to make it interesting. With 1:27 remaining in regulation, Dylan Larkin cut the LA lead to two.
Adrian Kempe sealed the Kings victory with an empty net goal - his 9th of the season, tying Alex Laferriere for the team lead.
The Kings will now get three days off between games before hosting the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. They only play three times in the next 10 days, a welcomed stretch of rest for a team that has played a conference leading 19 games.
