Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports - The Canadiens Draft Picks Are Set... For Now

In just over a week's time, the city of Nashville, TN. will play host to two of the biggest NHL events of the summer: the NHL Awards and the NHL Draft. The event marks the 20th anniversary of the first and only other time that Music City has hosted the event - the same year that the Nashville Predators drafted former Canadiens captain Shea Weber.

With the Vegas Golden Knights being awarded the Stanley Cup, the NHL was finally able to determine the final order of selection for all seven rounds of this year's draft. The Montreal Canadiens will select 11 times, with a breakdown of two first-round picks, one second-round and third-round pick, two fourth-round picks, two fifth-round picks, and a single pick in each of the sixth and seventh rounds.

Connor Bedard's inevitable first-overall selection by the Chicago Blackhawks aside, the remainder of the field, particularly the first round, is very much anyone's guess. Plenty of experts and draft analysts have published their final rankings and mock drafts, all with one thing in common: differences of opinion.

For Habs fans, all eyes will be on what Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton do with the fifth-overall pick, but that also leaves 10 more draft picks for the Canadiens to find their fair share of diamonds in the rough. Here's a comprehensive list of where they are scheduled to pick, and a bit of history of those picks in past Drafts.

First Round - Fifth Overall Pick

This will be the seventh time the Habs have owned the fifth-overall selection in NHL Draft history. Most recently, and most notably, was in 2005 when they picked a young goaltender named Carey Price. In 1984, defenseman Peter Svoboda was selected in the number five spot by Montreal.

First Round - 31st Overall Pick

Throughout the 2022-23 hockey season, Habs fans had high hopes that the first round pick the Canadiens received from the Florida Panthers in their trade for defenseman Ben Chiarot would result in a mid-round selection. But as the Panthers went on their deep run to chase the Stanley Cup, the placement of that first round pick dropped lower and lower until it finally settled at 31st overall.

Montreal has selected at this position four times before, including in 2021 when they selected defenseman Logan Mailloux, and in 1982 when they took defenseman Jocelyn Gauvreau.

Second Round - 37th Overall Pick

It's also been four times that the Habs have selected at 37th overall, including wingers like Mats Naslund (1979), Gregor Baumgartner (1997), and Duncan Milroy (2001).

Third Round - 69th Overall Pick

It's been quite some time since Montreal found themselves with pick number 69, and it's only happened three times. Most recent was in 1982 when they selected right winger John Devoe. Center Kevin Reeves was taken at the same position just four years earlier, in 1978.

Fourth Round - 101st Overall Pick

The fourth round could be a golden opportunity in this year's Draft for the Canadiens when they have three selections. First up is 101st overall pick, which was last held by the Habs in 1987 when they took defenseman Steve McCool.

Fourth Round - 110th Overall Pick

Just nine spots later, the Canadiens get to make another Draft selection, thanks to the 110th overall pick which they acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Jeff Petry trade. The only other time Montreal made a pick at 110 was in 1972 with the selection of goaltender Yves Archambault.

Fourth Round - 128th Overall Pick

The final fourth-round selection for Montreal in 2023 comes at 128th overall and marks another acquired pick in this year's Draft. This one comes from Vegas as a result of a trade in picks in 2022. Montreal has selected at this position twice before, taking center Cole Fonstad in 2018 and left winger Mario Desjardins in 1973.

Fifth Round - 133rd Overall Pick

2018 marked the last time the Canadiens had the 133rd overall selection at the Draft, and at that time they chose center Samuel Houde. Back in 1976, it was another center, Ron Wilson, who was claimed in this spot.

Sixth Round - 165th Overall Pick

Only on one other occasion have the Habs made a selection at number 165, and it was in 1990 when they decided on left winger Brent Fleetwood.

    Seventh Round - 197th Pick

It remains to be seen if Hughes hangs onto his sole seventh round pick, but if he does use it, it'll be just the second time in Canadiens history that they've drafted a player 197th overall. The last time was in 1997 when they named defenseman Petr Kubos as their choice.

And there you have it, a complete list of where the Montreal Canadiens will select their newest Draft class in just under two weeks. Those positions are bound to change a bit in the leadup to the event, or during the Draft itself, but it's fascinating to look back and be reminded of the history of how players came to join the organization. Which of this year's newest Canadiens will be remembered for decades to come?
