The Montreal Canadiens took part of a three-team trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks on Sunday, bringing defenseman Jeff Petry back to the Habs.

Former Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry is back in Montreal after Kent Hughes completed a three-team trade on Sunday. Working with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks, the Canadiens acquired Petry, along with goaltender Casey DeSmith, forward Nathan Lagare, and a 2025 second-round draft pick.
In return, Montreal sent forward Rem Pitlick to the Penguins, while the Sharks landed forward Mike Hoffman. The trade also saw San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson heading to Pittsburgh, along with forward Dillon Hamliuk and a 2026 third-round draft pick. The Sharks received forward Mikael Granlund, defenseman Jan Rutta, and a 2024 first-round draft pick from the Penguins.
Pittsburgh retains 25 percent of Petry's $6.25 million salary, leaving the Canadiens with $4,687,500 to pay in the defenseman's third year of a four-year contract.
While moving Pitlick and Hoffman off the roster and adding a second-round draft pick will be seen as a win for Montreal in this deal, questions are already swirling about the return of Petry and whether he'll be moved in a secondary trade sometime in the near future.
