The Montreal Canadiens traded defenseman Joel Edmundson to the Washington Capitals in exchange for two draft picks in the 2024 NHL Draft.

At the opening of free agency on July 1, the Montreal Canadiens announced that they had completed a trade with the Washington Capitals. In the move, defenseman Joel Edmundson was sent to Washington in exchange for a third-round and a seventh-round pick at the 2024 NHL Draft.

The third-round pick from the Capitals originally belonged to Minnesota, but was acquired in February 2023 when Washington traded forward Marcus Johannson to the Wild.

Additionally, Montreal will retain 50 per cent of Edmundson's salary, leaving them with $1.75 million on the books.
