The Laval Rocket's losing streak extended to three games to start the season with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Rochester Americans on Wednesday at Place Bell.
Rochester controlled the entire first period and took a 2-0 lead on nine shots before Laval took their first shot of the night. Consecutive penalties against the Canadiens' AHL affiliate led to the Americans increasing their lead to three goals.
Strauss Mann, starting in goal for the second consecutive contest, got his team on the board with a shorthanded goal. That's not a typo, Laval's goalie got credited with a goal after the puck rolled in to the opponent's net after making a stop during a delayed penalty.
Rochester increased their lead early in the second with a shorthanded goal on a 2-on-0 after Joel Armia was stripped of the puck at the blue line.
The Rocket got some momentum on their side with three consecutive power plays and Armia cut the lead to two goals with a blast from the slot. The forward has obtained a point in all three games with Laval.
Laval forced overtime with goals by Lucas Condotta and Mitchell Stephens. In the extra period, the Rocket failed to convert on a power play and Rochester's Jiri Kulich completed his hat trick for the victory.
Filip Mesar was dressed for his first regular season game of the year. He had a regular shift in the first two periods before limited ice time in the third period. Jean-Francois Houle justifed the reduced ice time due to the team playing catchup and Mesar's defensive deficiencies. The coach added that it was normal for a player his age.
