The Canadiens were hosting the best team in the Eastern Conference and were looking to rebound from a lackluster effort on Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres. The New York Rangers controlled the tempo of the first period making crisp passes and dominating the possession game. Shots on goal were 14-7 for the visitors but it was the Canadiens opening the scoring with Brendan Gallagher ending a lengthy goal drought. It was Gallagher's sixth goal of the year and his first since November 11th. The second period was a wild affair with Montreal adding two more goals in the first three minutes of the frame to take a 3-0 lead. At the midway point of the period, Vincent Trocheck put the Rangers on the board and they would add one more goal before the period had expired. Shots on goal were 20-13 for the visitors. At the 9:30 mark of the third period, Adam Fox rifled a shot past Sam Montembeault and the game was tied. The Canadiens had squandered a three goal lead turning the momentum over to the Rangers. The two teams each had chances in overtime but nothing was settled. Cole Caufield scored the only goal of the shootout and the Canadiens earned themselves a huge win. Once again, the Canadiens played a tight game in their own zone to insulate their goaltender. The Rangers registered 48 shots on goal but only 10 high danger scoring chances (5-on-5) in the game. Remarkably, Montreal skaters did not allow a high danger scoring chance (5-on-5) in the third period. Sam Montembeault - Montembeault made 45 saves including big stops against Alexis Lafreniere in overtime and Mika Zibanejad in the shootout.
