With Pick 15 the Nashville Predators select a forward with size, skill, and speed.
With their first pick in the 2023 NHL Draft the Nashville Predators select Matthew Wood, forward, University of Connecticut. Best known for his goal scoring, Wood also boasts NHL size at 6-feet-4-inches and 196 pounds. He is an intriguing package of size, scoring, and speed.
Wood wrapped up his freshman season at UConn where he scored 11 goals and 34 points in 35 games. Wood also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championship where he scored 7 goals and 13 points.
In talking to the Predators media after being drafted, Wood described his game in his own words.
"I'd say I am an offensive threat, and I can score from anywhere."
That isn't to say that Wood isn't focused on improving his game.
"I'm trying to get better in every aspect but really focusing on acceleration and strength," Wood said. "I think I'm going to be able to show what I've worked on throughout the summer next season."
Wood plans to return to UConn next season. He credits his first season at UConn with helping him arrive at this night.
"It's a huge credit to UConn culture and the coaches there and my teammates," he said.
The Predators spoke with the 18 year old prior to the draft. Wood shared that he watched part of the 2017 Stanley Cup run and got a glimpse of hockey in Nashville. He's enjoyed his first visit to Music City and will likely remain in town for development camp which begins next week.
As for the moment he heard his name called? Wood laughed.
"It was pretty cool. I almost already forget. It's just a blur. I'm super grateful and super happy."
