Matthew Schaefer scores his first NHL goal

Matthew Schaefer, the 2025 first overall pick was expected to contribute immediately on both sides of the puck, and he wasted no time showing what he can do on offense.

With just over 15 minutes left in the third period and the Islanders down 4-1, a battle for the loose puck in front of the Capitals net.

The play began with a beautiful blue pass from Schaefer to Anthony Duclair, who slid a cross crease pass over to Kyle Palmeri.

When Palmeri's shot was blocked by Logan Thompson, a battle ensued in the front of the net. Shaefer, who hadn't moved from the blue line, saw the puck emerge and charged the net, in an attempt to punch it in.

 While the puck was stuck in front of Tom Wilson, Schaefer was able to knock it in, notching his first career NHL goal.

Through two games, Schaefer has a goal, an assist, nine shots on goal and a +1, marking an excellent start to his much anticipated rookie season.
