New York Islanders defenseman Dennis Cholowski has cleared NHL waivers.
With defenseman Scott Mayfield (lower body) "ready to go" and fellow defenseman Ryan Pulock (upper body) a full participant in Thursday's practice, there's a chance both can be activated out of injured reserve before Sunday's game against the Dallas Stars.
The Islanders were going to have to make tough decisions with Mayfield, Pulock, and Noah Dobson (lower body, long-term injured reserve) working their way back and having Cholowski, Scott Perunovich, Adam Boqvist, and Tony DeAngelo on the roster.
Cholowski barely played in the four games after Mayfield went down, with the team essentially running five defensemen, going 1-2-1.
The 27-year-old, who made the team as the club's seventh defenseman out of training camp, had 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 33 games this season, averaging 12:48 minutes per game.
The Islanders return to the practice sheet on Saturday, a skate that will likely provide a crystal clear answer for Sunday's lineup.
