JERICHO, NY -- As the blinds went up, so did the donations to Matt Martin's Foundation Monday night at Opus Steak House.

Each year, before the start of training camp, Martin and his teammates participate in a charity poker tournament.

These charity events impact lives for the better.

"Our Poker event single-handedly funds the donation of a service dog to someone in need," Martin told The Hockey News. "This year our dog, Jett, will become the companion of a young girl suffering from Cerebral Palsy, and we are only able to make this impact with the help of our attendees, sponsors, and donors.

"Every year, my teammates come out and participate, and it makes all the difference in the success of the night and the fundraising. I can't thank the guys, the sponsors, the attendees, and the venue owners enough for helping us fulfill our mission."

All proceeds from merchandise sold were donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports families affected by the 9/11 tragedy.

On hand for the event were current Islanders Casey Cizikas, Cal Clutterbuck, Scott Mayfield, Mathew Barzal, Kyle Palmieri, Noah Dobson, Ilya Sorokin, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Pierre Engvall, Adam Pelech, Oliver Wahlstrom, along with former teammates Josh Bailey and Dennis Seidenberg.

Besides playing cards, the Islanders in attendance took pictures with fans and signed autographs, sharing laughs and smiles, which meant the world to the fan base.

"All these guys are first class. What an amazing event run by the Martin Foundation," Islanders fan Jack Allen shared with THN.

"The fun is unmatched," Kim Moisa told THN. "Not only are you playing for a great cause like the Matt Martin Foundation, but you can play against the Islanders! It's so much fun just to be able to say, 'I beat Pageau in poker.'

"The Islanders family comes together for a good cause, and it's a night full of games and laughs. I couldn't ask for a more wonderful night."

The charity raised over $200,000, a tremendous achievement.

"There's a very special bond between this group and the fans here. I've never actually seen anything like it in pro sports," foundation director Max Fienberg told THN. "The relationships are personal. It's incredible to see."

Sean Cuthbert, co-host of Hockey Night in New York, had the privilege to attend the event, furthering his belief in the incredible support that Islanders give to their communities.

"Whether it's Pat LaFontaine's Main Street Mile a week ago or Matt Martin's Poker tournament tonight, once again, the Islanders community has found common cause to rally behind a franchise icon," Cuthbert said. "Long Island and the Islanders are lucky to have Matt Martin and his dedication to a better tomorrow."
