ELMONT, NY – The New York Islanders fell to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in overtime Monday night in an overall frustrating game for New York.
The Islanders found themselves up 2-0 early in the third period before giving up three unanswered in the middle portion of the frame.
The goaltenders were the stars of the show, especially for the first two periods. Ilya Sorokin made 33 saves on 37 shots, and Ville Husso made 35 saves on 38 shots.
The first period included both teams having some high-level chances. Shots were close, with Detroit up 11-10. Husso robbed Casey Cizikas, who was all alone in front as time expired in the first period.
Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat both made great individual moves in the first but were stopped on the shots by Husso. Barzal was also stopped down low on a sprawling save attempt.
At the 18:39 mark of the second period, Casey Cizikas drove all the way down the ice and scored a shorthanded goal to put the Islanders up 1-0. Horvat got an assist.

Just into the third, Brock Nelson redirected a Noah Dobson slapped home a point shot to put the Islanders ahead only 1:05 in. Pierre Engvall earned the secondary helper.
This game had lots of chances for both teams, Husso and Sorokin both stood tall. Sorokin wasn’t beaten until 7:55 into the third when Daniel Sprong got the Red Wings on the board.
1:40 later, the Red Wings tied it up at two when Jake Walman scored. For Walman, it was his second point of the game.
Detroit wasn’t done as they took their first lead of the game, 3-2, stunning the Islanders with three goals in under four minutes. It was J.T. Compher, his second of the season.
But the home team showed no quit. With 4:59 remaining, Detroit forward David Perron was sent to the box for tripping Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho – and Bo Horvat made the Red Wings pay, scoring his fourth goal of the season with only 4:11 to play.
After some helter-skelter back-and-forth play to start OT, Lucas Raymond netted the game-winner 1:25 into the extra session. For Raymond, it’s his third goal of the season, and completed the comeback for Detroit, giving them the 4-3 victory.
The Islanders finished the game 1-for-2 on the power-play and 2-for-2 killing penalties, including a Cizikas shorthanded goal.
