ELMONT, NY – The New York Islanders dropped their second straight game Tuesday night after falling 5-2 to the Vancouver Canucks.
Brock Nelson scored two goals for the Islanders in the loss.
Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves on 33 shots in the losing effort for the Islanders, where Casey DeSmith stopped 17 of 19 Islander shots.
After killing off a penalty in the final five minutes of the first, a Filip Hronek slapshots sent Casey Cizikas to the ice. Unable to get up, a rebound eventually made it’s way back to Hronek, who sniped Ilya Sorokin with 3:35 remaining in the opening frame.
The goal was assisted by Ilya Mikheyev and Conor Garland.
With the Islanders unable to clear the defensive zone with 1:18 to play in the first, Quinn Hughes walked into the slot and ripped the puck home, giving the Canuck’s a 2-0 lead.
Both teams generated an even 11 shots after twenty minutes, but it was Vancouver who led the game 2-0. The Canucks generated the better of the chances.
The beginning of the second period brought a crucial penalty kill for the Islanders, where they had to kill off 3:50 of Canucks power-play time.
New York began to gain some momentum after a successful kill the penalties off but after failing to capitalize on their offensive chances, the Canucks added their third tally of the game.
At 10:20 of the middle period, Elias Pettersson made it 3-0 Canucks, after he stole the puck from Adam Pelech before finishing off a give-and-go with J.T. Miller for an easy tap-in.
Nelson got the Islanders on the board with a power play goal at 11:11 of the second, finishing off a strong backhand feed from Kyle Palmieri to cut their deficit to 3-1.
Tyler Myers rifled one home off the rush from just inside the right dot, beating Sorokin blocker side at 17:24 of the second to extend the Canucks’ lead to 4-1.
The third period was very sloppy, with the Islanders continuing to turn the puck over. Neither team gained sustained pressure in the offensive zones.
Nelson added his second goal of the game with 4:45 remaining on the clock. He floated the puck through traffic and beat DeSmith high.
New York didn’t get the bounces in this game as with an empty net Barzal turned the puck over. Dakota Joshua ripped the puck into the empty cage from his own blue line with 1:28 to go in the game.
