The Islanders failed to build on Saturday’s win.
The New York Islanders failed to carry momentum over from their Saturday night 6-3 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, falling 3-2 to Sidney Crosby.
Marcus Hogberg, in his first start since Apr. 28, 2021, made 39 saves on 42 shots.
Here’s how it happened:
Former Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring at 3:54 of the first after he buried a 2-on-1 feed from Michael Bunting at the top of the crease:
The Islanders got a tad better as the period went on, but still struggled to get shots off in transition.
The positive was that Hogberg was dialed in, attacking shooters and more or less controlling his rebounds.
The shots were 6-6 after the opening 20.
The Islanders found themselves shorthanded early in the second after Noah Dobson took a tripping penalty.
The Islanders penalty kill, which was 3-for-4 on Saturday, failed on that one, with Michael Bunting scoring from the low slot off a backhand feed from Sidney Crosby, a record-setting assist:
The Islanders had two power plays in the second to get back in the game but Alex Nedeljkovic stood tall.
The Penguins added another goal, with one second to go on the power play when Philip Tomasino’s shot hit off Alexander Romanov and in at 6:57 of the third:
The Islanders ended Nedeljkovic’s shutout bid at 12:59 of the third after he deflected Alexander Romanov’s point shot to make it a 3-1 game with Hogberg on the bench:
Bo Horvat banked one in at 16:10 of the third to make it a 3-2 game but that’s as close as they were able to get.
