For the first time in over two years, the New York Islanders mounted a multi-goal comeback in the third period to win in regulation, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Florida Panthers 4-2 on Sunday night, per The Skinny.
The comeback was a team effort, as goals came from four different skaters with nine total players registering at least a point.
The Islanders last accomplished this feat on Oct. 29, 2022, also against then-reigning Stanley Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche.
In that game, the Islanders scored four unanswered goals in the third period, just like they did Sunday night against Florida.
Zach Parise got the first of four goals in the period at 3:35, followed by two goals in 17 seconds by Scott Mayfield and Anthony Beauvillier just past the halfway mark before Brock Nelson’s empty netter at 18:39.
Up next for the Islanders is the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are just two points behind them in the standings and have won four straight.
