Ilya Sorokin: Islanders Goalie Has Now Lost 11 Games When Allowing Just One Goal Or Fewer

Stefen Rosner on Morning Cuppa Hockey Talking Islanders

The New York Islanders' 1-0 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday was an unfortunate one for Ilya Sorokin

The netminder let up a goal on his first shot but stopped all nine shots that followed, but Alex Lyon pitched a 29-save shutout to give Detroit the win.

Per MSG statistician Eric Hornick, it was the 11th loss of Sorokin's career where he received one goal or fewer of support and lost; he has a 44-4-7 record in those games.

This is the second time this season that Sorokin has suffered that fate, losing a 1-0 overtime decision to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

New York is fortunate that he can play well enough to get them at least a point in the standings, with seven of them being overtime or shootout losses.

However, on the nights where he can be at his best, it's a matter of his teammates giving him the goal support to get the win.

Among some of the 1-0 losses are a regulation loss to the Washington Capitals in the 2021 season, a regulation loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2021-22 season and shootout losses to the Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, respectively.

Hornick also notes that New York Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin has only dropped four contests with one goal or fewer allowed, but three of them have been in regulation.

The Islanders offense was in a predicament on Tuesday, with Anthony Duclair likely to miss substantial time with a lower-body injury.

This is the second time this has happened in a week, and it can be a cause for concern early in the season.

The Islanders return to action on Friday against the New Jersey Devils at 7:30 p.m.
