On Friday, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced that New York Islanders forward Maxim Tsyplakov would receive a hearing for a high hit on Philadelphia Flyers forward Ryan Poehling.
The hit occurred in the first period of the game when Poehling was cutting to the low slot. Tsyplakov read the play and then laid an explosive hit:
Despite being deemed a legal hit upon the officials' video review in their 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, the DoPS has the right to review and hand out discipline.
After an over-the-phone hearing with Tsyplakov, the DoPS has handed him a three-game suspension.
Tsyplakov will forfeit $14,843.76. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assist Fund.
He can return against the Carolina Hurricanes on Jan. 25. He'll be ineligible to play during that time.
With Tsyplakov out of the lineup, Marc Gatcomb, who was recalled on Friday, could skate in his second NHL game on Saturday against the San Jose Sharks.
The 25-year-old undrafted forward made his NHL debut in Tuesday's 2-0 shutout loss to the Ottawa Senators.
He played 7:27, with a block, four hits, a takeaway, and won his only face-off.
There is a chance that the injured Simon Holmstrom, who has missed the last six games with an upper-body injury, could be activated out of injured reserve and play.
