    Former New York Islanders general manager Neil Smith shared with Stefen Rosner and Sean Cuthbert on Hockey Night in New York why he had such a short tenure on the island, how proud he is of Kyle Okposo and more.

    Neil Smith became the general manager of the New York Islanders on June 8, 2006. 

    By July 19, 2006, Smith was out after disagreements with the late team owner Charles Wang on how the team should be run.

    In those 40 days at the helm, Smith got a lot done, drafting Kyle Okposo with the seventh overall pick in the draft.

    He brought in players like Tom Poti, Brendan Witt, and the late Chris Simon, building a team that made the playoffs -- by the skin of their teeth.
