Mayfield connected with Lindgren's jaw on a nasty uppercut.

When the New York Islanders battled the New York Rangers for their second preseason game on Sept. 24, 2024, Scott Mayfield drilled Filip Chytil at center ice in the first period.

That led to Ryan Lindgren dropping the gloves with Mayfield.

It was a double-whammy for the Rangers, as Chytil and Lindgren left the game.

Chytil returned for the start of the second, while Lindgren did not return, as he went on to miss the first five games of the regular season.

He returned wearing a full face shield.

Mayfield's uppercut appeared to have broken Lindgren's jaw, which required surgery:

There was a lot of talk this summer about who would be the Islanders' fighter with Matt Martin no longer on the ice for games.

In the situation against the Rangers, Lindgren initiated the fight, but Mayfield has shown in the past that he'll stand up for his teammates.

The Islanders have yet to drop the gloves this season.

They're focused on scoring goals, as they've been shut out three times in their last six games.
