Rögle BK of the Swedish Elite League celebrated the Islanders alumnus in a pregame ceremony on Tuesday.
Following Kenny Jonsson's induction to the IIHF Hall of Fame in May, Rögle BK of the Swedish Elite League celebrated the New York Islanders alumnus in a pregame ceremony on Tuesday.
The club celebrated Jonsson prior to their home opener against Frolunda HC with a whole day dedicated to the former defenseman.
Among the highlights were an intermission chat, an on-ice presentation of flowers, a special painting, and a tifo waved by the crowd before puck drop.
Jonsson received his honor from the IIHF for a dominating career on the international stage for Sweden. The defenseman made 14 appearances in international tournaments, including three Olympic Winter Games, seven IIHF World Championship, two World Juniors and a World Cup of Hockey.
In international play, he tallied 19 goals and 29 assists for 48 points in 84 games.
He also won two Olympic golds in 1994 and 2006 and a World Championship victory in the latter year.
Across his international career, he has won seven medals -- three golds, one silver, and three bronze.
As a member of Rögle BK, he tallied 16 goals and 48 assists for 64 points in 130 games between two runs with the club. He also captained the club from 2005-09, and his number 19 is honored in the rafters.
After playing five seasons in Sweden, he made the jump to the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs before being dealt to the Islanders in the Wendel Clark trade. Jonsson became a fan favorite on Long Island for his strong play at the blue line, ultimately serving as captain for two seasons.
He was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2012.
In nine seasons with New York, he totaled 57 goals and 175 assists for 232 points in 597 games. Across a 10-year NHL career, he owns 63 goals and 204 assists for 267 in 686 games.
