Islanders Fall 5-4 in OT to Devils ELMONT, NY -- The New York Islanders battled back and tied it late but ultimately fell in overtime 5-4 to the New Jersey Devils. Jack Hughes scored the game-winner in overtime with his fourth point of the night. Bo Horvat had two goals for the Islanders including the game-tying goal with 1:11 remaining in the game. With the Islanders net empty, the puck was thrown towards the net where Mathew Barzal hit it forward and Horvat jumped on the rebound to tie the game up. Matt Martin sent it out of the corner to Noah Dobson at the point, where he found Horvat down low in the left circle. Horvat one-timed it off of Schmid’s pad and into the net for his first of the season. The name of the game was penalties as the Islanders gave up four goals while shorthandend. New Jersey was 4-5 on the power-play tonight. New York had yet to have given up a power-play goal from their previous two games against Buffalo and Arizona. Brock Nelson scored his second and third goals of the season. Nelson found himself skating in on a 3-on-2 with his linemates Pierre Engvall, who had an assist, and Kyle Palmieri, who had two assists. Nelson did what he does best and ripped a snap shot past the glove of Akira Schmid. His second of the game tied the score up at two. Palmieri found Nelson all alone for a break in the offensive zone, where Nelson slid it through Schmid’s five-hole with ease. Ilya Sorokin made a few spectacular saves tonight including one with 4:31 to go in the first period where Jack Hughes was left all alone in the slot. Hughes slowed down and made a backhand move before Sorokin went into the butterfly and robbed Hughes with the glove. Sorokin finished the game with 33 saves on 38 shots. Schmid stopped 28 of 32 Islanders shots. Jack Hughes got the last laugh with the game-winning-goal and another goal along with two assists in the game. Hughes did it all himself with lots of time and space in overtime before absolutely ripping it over Sorokin’s glove side. The second period was mayhem with tons of back and forth action to start. 21 seconds into the period Tyler Toffoli sniped a power-play goal top corner past Sorokin. An Adam Pelech delay-of-game penalty put New Jersey right back on the power-play, where Luke Hughes got his first goal of the season through a screen from the point. New York battled back to earn a point in the overtime loss ahead of their road debut tomorrow night. They finished their opening homestand with 5 points in three games.
