Brock Nelson recorded his 500th career point by scoring the Islanders' first goal of the game. Ilya Sorokin was credited with the loss in what was his tenth straight game for the Islanders, stopping 24 of 27 Vegas shots. This was a game the Islanders played well in but narrowly fell in their second game with Patrick Roy behind the bench. New York played with lots of energy but could not tie the game up at three after a few mistakes in the second period. The Islanders came into this game flying, where they dominated the chances and pace of the game. Kyle MacLean rang a shot off the post 9:30 into the game as he was just inches away from burying his first NHL goal in his third game. However, it was Vegas who got on the board first as at 11:52 the Golden Knights pounced on an Adam Pelech turnover. The shot came from Alex Pietrangelo at the point and was beautifully deflected into the net by Ivan Barbashev. Vegas took control of the momentum after going up 1-0, ripping lots of shots trying to add to their lead. The first period ended with the Golden Knights scoring the only goal. The Islanders played a strong, fast-paced period, but ended up being down on the scoreboard. They led the shot department over Vegas nine to seven after 20 minutes. With a delayed penalty early into the second period, the Islanders were able to take advantage. They worked the puck around the offensive zone, not allowing Vegas to touch it. A great pass from Alex Romanov found Nelson with some open space where he fired it past Hill, tying the game at one 3:35 into the second period. Noah Dobson recorded the secondary. Vegas got a chance on the power play shortly after, where Sheldon Rempal entered the zone and blew a tough angle shot by Sorokin restoring the Golden Knights lead at the 7:18 mark. It was Rempal’s first NHL goal in his 14th career game, and 2nd game this year. The Golden Knights doubled their lead 1:47 later, making the score 3-1 as Nicholas Roy cleaned up a rebound in front of Sorokin. Dobson turned the puck over to Barbashev who entered the zone with Jonathan Marchessault and Roy. Both Marchessault and Barbashev got the assists. After the goals, the Islanders struggled to keep control of the puck. When they did have it though, they had the better of the offensive chances but couldn't get another one into the back of the net during the second. The Islanders doubled the Golden Knights in shots during the second period but went to the dressing room down 3-1. To start the third period the Islanders had a chance on the power play, the first of the Patrick Roy era. New York was unable to find a rebound or score and Vegas was able to kill it off. The Islanders got another chance shortly after but couldn’t score on that attempt either. With Vegas on the power play, it was the Islanders who scored shorthanded. Simon Holmstrom dropped it for JG Pageau who put the puck in the toy department. Pelech was driving to the net and had the secondary assist. The goal came with 10:34 left to play. The Islanders then killed off the remainder of the penalty in part due to a huge glove save from Sorokin. The Islanders had many chances throughout the third period, including a lot of time of possession, but were unable to get the goal to force overtime. New York lost to Vegas 3-2.
