Islanders Beat Oilers 3-1 ELMONT, NY -- After exploding for three goals in the second period, the New York Islanders [https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/new-york-islanders/latest-news/noah-dobson-new-york-islanders-assists-power-play-defense-romanov-lambert] held on to beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1. The Oilers started the scoring early, just 1:23 into the game when Leon Draisaitl snapped a shot past Sorokin. It was a clean breakout of the defensive zone for Edmonton, where the puck moved up the ice from Mattias Ekholm to Warren Foegele before Draisaitl entered the Islander zone and scored. The Islanders were outplayed heavily for the early portion of the first period but took control with lots of chances with under five minutes left. New York led in shots with nine compared to Edmonton’s seven. Anders Lee tied the game at 1-1 for the Islanders with a power play goal 2:39 into the second period. Kyle Palmieri took the initial shot that snuck behind Skinner, and Lee smacked it home. Barzal was credited with the secondary assist. Horvat scored another power-play goal for the Islanders to give them a 2-1 lead at 11:30. Brock Nelson made a terrific long-range pass into the slot through multiple defenders to Horvat, who roofed the shot blocker side. Noah Dobson earned the secondary assist to give him 28 on the season. The Oilers had a 5-on-3 for just under a minute and another minute on the power play after. Not only did the Islanders kill off the penalties, but they added a shorthanded goal, again from Simon Holmstrom. For Holmstrom, it was his tenth goal of the season and league-leading fifth shorthanded goal. JG Pageau had the assist on Holmstrom's yet again when they made the score 3-1. Both teams took nine shots apiece in the second period, but the Islanders were the only team to find the scoresheet three times. Neither team scored in the third period, even with both teams having chances on the power play. Edmonton pulled the goaltender with around five minutes remaining, but a Zach Hyman tripping penalty forced the Oilers to return Skinner to the net and he remained there until time expired.
