Senators fans weigh in on their emotions Tuesday night after Vegas captain Mark Stone was presented with the Stanley Cup.

The Vegas Golden Knights are only six years old. And yet they already have four conference final appearances and now a Stanley Cup title. No expansion team in NHL history has ever come out of the gates like this. Not even close.
For Ottawa Senators fans, at least some, that's likely to cause at least a small pang of jealousy. While the Knights were achieving all that in the past six years, the Sens have been doing renovations, missing the playoffs in each of the past six years. Part of the renovations have meant acquiring picks and prospects while they shipped fan favourites out of town.
That includes Mark Stone, who got a chance to live the dream and hoist the Stanley Cup Tuesday night.
"There are two players over my tenure (as Sens GM) that were really tough to move... and Mark Stone was one of them," Pierre Dorion told the Cam and Strick podcast last month. "I remember talking to (Eugene Melnyk) at the time, and I said, 'You know what? He wants an eight year deal. My recommendation is give him the money that he wants.'
"And (Melnyk) goes, 'Well, what's the downside?' I said, 'Well, when you give eight year deals, at this point in their career, some of their latter years in the contract, they're not as beneficial.' He goes, 'Well, we're doing the rebuild, and (those latter years) are when we're gonna start to win. So those contracts are gonna be more important.'
"I don't think Mark wanted to be... I think he would've ended up staying, but I think he was happy to go to a team that probably was going to contend."
So that's the 2019 story of why Stone became a Vegas Golden Knight. It should be noted that, while Stone was on an expiring contract in 2019, the Sens had two earlier chances to re-sign him long-term. Instead, they gave him a three year deal in 2015 and a one year in 2018.
The Ottawa reactions seemed split on seeing Stone win it all Tuesday night, picking up a hat trick in the process.
