The NHL winger remains a restricted free agent as an ongoing investigation continues.

According to his Swiss hockey club's website, Ottawa Senators restricted free agent Alex Formenton has apparently re-signed with HC Ambri-Piotta until the end of the calendar year. The club holds an option to extend the deal to the end of this season and there is an NHL out-clause that allows Formenton to return to the NHL at any time.

Here's the team statement on its website (with the aid Google Translate):

"Formenton's situation remains unchanged. The club is aware there is an ongoing investigation and, to date, there has been no charge nor conviction against the player. The club reserves the right to review the contractual situation with the player should new elements emerge. The player, for his part, has the possibility of returning to the NHL at any time if the second investigation were to resolve like the first with nothing done. Out of respect for the ongoing investigations, the player and club will not release further statements on the situation."

Formenton was a member of the 2018 gold medal-winning Canadian World Junior team. Some unnamed members of that team have been part of a long investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a woman by eight hockey players in June 2018. Formenton has not commented on the investigation or the incident, nor has he been publicly named or charged.

The news of the incident and investigations broke last year, around the time Formenton became a restricted free agent. While the Senators didn't re-sign him, they still retain his NHL playing rights. He scored 10 goals and 13 points in 22 games in Switzerland last season.
