After a March hamstring injury ended his season early, Jakob Chychrun is fully healthy and skating again.
Ottawa Senators defenceman Jakob Chychrun has had more than his fair share of injuries in his young NHL career. Since joining the NHL as an 18-year-old in 2016-17, here's a list of the number of games Chychrun has missed each season.
2016-17: 0 (Updated to indicate that the 14 games he missed that year were due to being healthy scratched as a rookie)
2017-18: 32
2018-19: 29
2019-20: 19
2020-21: 0
2021-22: 35
2022-23: 36
That's a lot of missed games, but make no mistake, it's definitely not because Chychrun isn't trying to take care of himself.
The Ottawa Senators posted a short video on their social media Friday that, for the average fan, was exhausting just to watch. Looking every bit like a body double for Chris Hemsworth in Thor, Chychrun took Senator fans through a hard day's worth of his training, health care treatment and nutritional choices.
Throughout the video, Chychrun was chowing down on large chunks of watermelon (but if you told us it was chunks of raw, red meat we'd have no trouble believing you).
The 25-year-old began his busy day working his edges with training from former figure skater Tracey Wilson, a seven-time national champion and Olympic medalist.
From there, it was off to see movement specialist Lisa Schklar, who literally walked all over Chychrun to improve the state of both muscle tissue and bone. He also hit all kinds of movement drills, many of them with an exercise ball, to increase core strength and flexibility.
Then it was a trip to see a sports specialist chiropractor, Dr. Ian MacIntyre, who did what appeared to be an ultrasound along his pubic bone and declared that Chychrun had "good fibre orientation." Chychrun has now been cleared to play after suffering a hamstring injury in March.
The doctor also performed a number of what appeared to be chiropractic adjustments.
"He's been doing a good job of sort of pulling himself back a little bit and letting tissue recover," MacIntyre said. "Enough time's gone by that we're starting to get the tissue to heal nicely. His movement and his activation patterns have improved a lot."
The day was capped by a trip to the produce section of the grocery store where Chychrun bought some rib-eyes, liver, eggs, butter and oranges. He also browsed the bone marrow bones but held off for now.
Even as he rehabbed an injury, it's crystal clear that there's really no "off" in Jakob Chychrun's off-season. And hopefully, it all translates to a healthy first full season in Ottawa.
