The Ottawa Senators' three game winning streak slammed hard into a brick wall on Sunday night with a 7-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at Canadian Tire Centre. Dmitri Orlov led the way for Carolina with two goals and four points.
The Senators were right in this game through the first two periods, but gave up a late goal in the second period and then allowed three goals on their first three shots of the third.
Freddy Andersen outdueled Anton Forsberg as Carolina outshot Ottawa 38-32.
The ‘Canes opened the scoring early, as Sens’ opponents so often do, with Orlov’s breakaway goal. The Sens got caught up ice with four skaters at Carolina’s goal line, setting up a transitional jail break the other way.
Six minutes later, Thomas Chabot made amends for his ill advised forecheck with a fantastic top corner wrist shot from a bad angle. Chabot now has five goals in his last nine games after scoring just two in his first 30.
The two clubs traded slick wrist shot goals in the second (Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tim Stutzle) and it looked like the game was headed for the third tied at two.
But Seth Jarvis then scored the game winner for the Hurricanes with 23 seconds left in the second period. Jarvis took a harmless shot from the half boards but then had a red carpet stroll to the net, where he received a pass and scored the last goal Carolina would need.
But the ‘Canes poured it on for good measure in the third, scoring four times, including three goals on their first three shots of the third period.
"At some point, you gotta learn about game management," head coach Jacques Martin said. "It's part of being a good pro, it's part of being a good team. When you look at the third goal, we had puck possession in the offensive zone and turned it over and it ends up in our net. Those are things you have to learn and rectify."
Fans in the building needed to adjust to the Sens' jersey switch to white, especially when the opposing team colours were so close to Ottawa’s normal home blacks. Apparently, the switch was at the request of the Hurricanes.
The Senators are back at it in Boston on Tuesday night.
