In the early days of the Ottawa Senators' history, their head coach was Rick Bowness and their GM was Randy Sexton. Fast forward 30 years, and now their sons both hold meaningful positions within the club's hockey operations department.
For the past two years, Ryan Bowness has been the Senators' assistant GM. Now Ben Sexton has joined the club as an assistant coach.
Sexton is a former Nepean Raider, drafted by the Boston Bruins, who got into two NHL games with the Senators in 2017-18. Since retiring as a player, he's spent the past three years as an assistant coach in Belleville.
In the worst-kept secret in town, the Sens also officially announced the hiring of Sean Tierney, their first full-time analytics guy. He's most recently been with Sportlogiq, a Montreal-based company that specializes in hockey analytics. Tierney will help inform the Senators’ hockey operations department in their evaluations and decision-making.
The Senators have also promoted Rob Murphy to take over as chief professional scout from Jim Clark. The club's statement today indicated that Clark will stay on in the pro scouting department, but did not give a reason for the move or whose decision it was.
Down in Belleville, to replace Sexton, the B-Sens have hired Kitchener Rangers head coach Chris Dennis as an assistant. Dennis has also been an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the AHL's Chicago Wolves. He joins fellow assistant Nathan McIver who was hired in Belleville back in July.
