Allison has been in the Flyers' system since being drafted in 2016.
With just a couple days left to reduce the roster down to 23 players, the Philadelphia Flyers opted to make a tough decision Friday afternoon by placing forward Wade Allison on waivers.
Allison, who was selected in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, is entering the final year of the two-year, $1.57 million contract he signed in August of 2022. There is a very real chance that he could be claimed off waivers by a team in search of a bottom-six winger.
The soon-to-be 26-year-old is coming off his best NHL campaign to date with nine goals and 15 points in 60 games last season. He also compiled 190 hits, which ranked second on the team behind only Nic Deslauriers. Unfortunately, he hasn't shown enough throughout training camp to warrant being given a roster spot over some of the Flyers' younger prospects — namely Tyson Foerster and Bobby Brink, who have dazzled at times during the preseason.
Allison's durability concerns haven't exactly done him any favors, either.
"His game's improved. Always hurt," Tortorella told the media in March.
"It's hard to be consistent when you're always hurt. That's my struggle is you see him coming, you see him coming, now he's out again. Certainly no negative thoughts or comments on when he's playing."
Allison's injury struggles date back to as early as his days at Western Michigan University, where he suffered a torn ACL and a separated shoulder. This past season, he suffered an oblique muscle strain and hip pointer, causing him to miss a quarter of the campaign.
Teams will have until Saturday afternoon to claim Allison off waivers. If he clears, he will likely be assigned to Lehigh Valley.
With Allison on waivers, the Flyers have two more players to release in order to reach the 23-player limit. Final rosters are due Monday at 5 p.m. ET.
