The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Colin White to a one-year contract.
The Pittsburgh Penguins made another move to solidify their roster for the 2023-24 season. The battle for bottom-six forward roles has been one of the most intriguing competitions in camp, with a variety of players auditioning for contracts and NHL roster spots. One of the spots is now claimed after it was announced the team signed Colin White to a one-year, two-way contract with an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level.
White comes with some pedigree, being a former first round pick of the Ottawa Senators and standout collegiate player at Boston College. After six years with the Senators organization, White joined the Florida Panthers last year before being invited to the Penguins' training camp this summer
White has amassed 292 career games, accumulating 113 points since his NHL debut in 2017. He has two 10+ goal seasons under his belt, and his most productive offensive campaign came in 2018-19, when he scored 14 goals and 41 points. This past year in Florida, he collected 15 points in 68 games and played in 21 postseason games with the Panthers en route to their Stanley Cup matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights.
White brings a variety of skills and assets to the Penguins' depth. He can contribute offensively, is reliable defensively, and can play wing and center. He should be one of the top four penalty killers and can consistently bring speed and grit to the ice. At age 26, he's still young enough to help balance out the aging roster in Pittsburgh while also providing more playoff experience. He will most likely start the season on the third line right wing.
The signing is a low-risk commitment and shrewd move by Kyle Dubas and company. If he doesn't work out as a third or fourth liner, they can waive him or move on at the end of the year. In the meantime, it seems White has earned not only a contract, but an important role for the Penguins.
