Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Harrison Brunicke made history last night against the New York Rangers, becoming the first South African-born skater in NHL history.
He becomes the second South African-born player, joining goalie Olaf Kölzig, who played 17 seasons (1989-2009) with the Washington Capitals.
A combination of Brunicke's progess last season with the Kamloops Blazers and Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins, as well as his strong preseason play, led to him being called up for opening night.
He played alongside Caleb Jones on the third defensive pairing, and recorded two penalty minutes across 15 minutes of ice time in the Penguins 3-0 win over the New York Rangers.
Do you think Brunicke can grow into a star in Pittsburgh?
