7 Fascinating Statistics About Sidney Crosby's Career

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is close to signing a contract extension, which will prolong his career in the Steel City and give him a chance to retire in the same place where it all started.

As the reports begin to circulate that the two sides are close to a deal, let's see how much Crosby has meant to the franchise since his debut in 2005. Here are seven fascinating facts about the soon-to-be 37-year-old.

Crosby Has Never Scored a Penalty Shot Goal

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Crosby, who has 592 goals, plus 71 more in the playoffs, has never scored a penalty shot goal and is currently 0-for-5. Surprisingly, he's achieved something more challenging, scoring a playoff overtime goal, but he has yet to light the lamp in the one-on-one shootout.

Crosby Has Four Points Against Marc-Andre Fleury

The Penguin's all-time wins leader is former first-overall pick Marc-Andre Fleury. He played just 21 games before Crosby debuted, and together, the two would usher in a new era of Pittsburgh hockey with three Stanley Cup titles in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

Unfortunately, hockey is a business, and the Penguins didn't protect Fleury in the 2017 Expansion Draft. He ended up with the Vegas Golden Knights and has since played in Chicago and Minnesota. Thus far, Crosby has had two goals and two assists against his former teammate, who shared the same dressing room for 12 seasons.

He Wouldn't Win the Lady Byng Trophy if He Played in the Battle of the Hudson

Considering Crosby's built-in rivalry with the cross-state Philadelphia Flyers, he has only amassed 48 penalty minutes against the club, the fourth most against any team in his career.

However, it appears Crosby gets in more trouble when visiting the two teams in the Hudson River Rivalry. He's collected 74 penalty minutes against the New Jersey Devils and 70 against the New York Rangers, the most against any opponent.

Crosby Has At Least 50 Points Against 15 Franchises

In his first NHL game against the Devils, Crosby picked up an assist, and three nights later, he scored his first goal against the Boston Bruins. Twenty years later, he's scored a goal and an assist against all 31 teams.

With 1,596 points, Crosby has scored at least 50 points against every Eastern Conference team except the Detroit Red Wings, who relocated in 2013. He only needs six more points against them to complete the circuit.

One of Six Players With More Than 200 Points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Penguins icon Mario Lemieux could only do so much in his career, appearing in the Stanley Cup playoffs just eight times in 17 seasons. Conversely, Crosby has been to the postseason 15 times, allowing him to pile up 201 points in 180 games.

The only players ahead of him in the NHL record book all played with the 1980s Edmonton Oilers, and they are Wayne Gretzky (382 points), Mark Messier (295), Jari Kurri (233), and Glenn Anderson (214). At fifth overall, Crosby is tied with former Penguin Jaromir Jagr.

He Ranks First Overall in Career Earnings in NHL History

According to figures available at CapFriendly, Crosby has earned over $141 million in salary to be the highest-paid player in NHL History based on career earnings.

Of course, those figures don't consider endorsement deals, which increase his net worth and make him one of the wealthiest professional hockey players ever.

One of Four Penguins Who Rank in the Top 10 in the NHL Scoring

Every hockey fan knows Gretzky is the game's most prolific scorer, with 2,857 points. The Great One never played in Pittsburgh, but the second-highest scorer of all time did: Jagr, who has 1,921 points.

Meanwhile, at fifth overall, Ron Francis netted 1,798 points and skated alongside Jagr in the 1990s. Together, the pair shared the same lineup card as Lemieux, who ended his career with 1,723 points, ranking eighth all-time.

When Crosby scored his 1,591st point, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Phil Esposito, he moved into 10th place all-time, expanding the group of players associated with the Penguins in the Top 10 in league scoring to four.
