The Pittsburgh Penguins enter Tuesday night with 96 goals scored this season in 32 games, which ranks 13th in the NHL. They are averaging 3.00 goals a game, 18th behind the Utah Hockey Club and ahead of the Seattle Kraken.
At the moment, only two players, Rickard Rakell (13) and Bryan Rust (12), have reached double digits in goals, with Rust recording the Penguins' only hat trick against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 12.
Twenty-seven players have dressed for a game this season, with 20 lighting the lamp. Four skaters have played more than ten games and have yet to score, while three others have had limited opportunities, dressing in six or less.
Surprisingly, despite the lack of goal-scoring from future Hall of Famers Sidney Crosby (eight) and Evgeni Malkin (six), Pittsburgh remains in the hunt for a wild card spot.
However, some players are on lengthy scoring droughts. Let's look at some names that haven't scored in more than five games.
The Penguins will face one of the league's most formidable goalie-defenseman combinations on Tuesday. The Kings are tied with the Dallas Stars with a 2.50 goals-against per game, and they have surrendered the fewest goals (75), both top marks in the NHL.
Hopefully, someone ends one of these lengthy droughts, or Pittsburgh could drop their second consecutive game after an offensive explosion against the Canadiens last week.
