The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired prospect Melvin Fernström from the Vancouver Canucks. Here's a look at his hockey career in Sweden.

On Jan. 31, the Pittsburgh Penguins made a trade with the Vancouver Canucks, acquiring NHLers Danton Heinen and Vincent Deshanais in exchange for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor.

Another player in the trade going from the Canucks to the Penguins is 18-year-old Melvin Fernström. Initially drafted by Vancouver in the third round (93rd overall) at the 2024 Draft, he's yet to play in North America, staying in his native Sweden to skate in the J20 Nationell and SHL.

The 6-foot-2 right-winger is considered an offensive forward and sniper on his Elite Prospects profile.

So far, in his first full season with Örebro HK in the SHL, he's scored four goals and ten points in 36 games. Moreover, Fernström had 11 goals and 18 points in 12 games with Örebro HK J20.

While skating with Örebro HK J18, he's a two-time SM gold medalist, winning a silver medal at the J20 SM level. Fernström led the West J18  division with 38 points in 2022-23 while pacing the entire J20 league with 31 goals last year.

Even though he has yet to play at the U20 World Junior Championship, Fernström earned a bronze medal at the U18 World Juniors.

Meanwhile, he got to skate alongside highly touted Swedish prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki last season and shared the ice with recently called-up Canucks prospect Elias Pettersson

Following the announcement of his trade from Vancouver to Pittsburgh, Fernström had a goal and an assist in his next game on Feb. 1, a Örebro 6-3 loss to Brynäs IF.
