The Pittsburgh Penguins might need a goalie, and Cam Talbot makes more sense than certain names.
It wasn’t a situation the Pittsburgh Penguins expected to be in at the start of the year, but they might have to see what’s around the NHL’s goalie market before the trade deadline.
An injury prone Tristan Jarry and unplayable Casey DeSmith has forced their hand and a number of pundits have stated the Penguins would be a good landing spot for multiple goalies.
Elliotte Friedman stated Pittsburgh is a destination that makes sense for the injured Thatcher Demko.
While Demko doesn’t make sense for the team at the moment, another person of interest has been linked to Pittsburgh.
According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, the Penguins have been linked to 35-year-old Ottawa Senators goalie Cam Talbot.
On Pagnotta’s list of the top-30 possible trade pieces, Talbot fell in at 17 and the goalie ideally wants to land on a winning team.
The Senators are good, but not quite yet ready to make the postseason and Talbot hasn’t been their main man.
Talbot and Anton Forsberg has split time pretty much right down the middle with 25 and 24 starts respectively.
Through his 25 starts and 28 appearances, Talbot has picked up a 12-13-1 record with a .905 save percentage and 2.90 goals against average.
Talbot is in the final year of his contract and is making $3.666 million against the salary cap.
While Talbot could be a solid option as a backup/1B for Jarry, it’s not certain that’s the kind of role Talbot wants for himself.
Talbot was traded away from the Minnesota Wild this past offseason because he didn’t want to split time with Marc-Andre Fleury.
If you can convince Talbot that his role in Pittsburgh will purely be to back up Jarry, or even play as a 1B, then this could be a smart move for the Penguins.
