The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to have an irregular set of defenders with another emergency recall.
PITTSBURGH - Just in time for the final run of the season as a spot in the playoffs hangs by a thread, the Pittsburgh Penguins are digging deep for defensemen.
The Penguins, already down Dmitry Kulikov and Jeff Petry, have placed Marcus Pettersson on long-term injured reserve.
With the movement of Pettersson, Taylor Fedun has also been recalled to the NHL roster on an emergency basis.
Thanks to all of the defenders down, Fedun is likely to play in his first game since the 2020 bubble playoffs with the Dallas Stars.
For the past two seasons, Fedun has been the captain of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
In 53 games with WBS this season, Fedun has recorded 10 points (3G-7A).
Fedun was recalled earlier in the season, but did not appear in any games.
Pettersson was an early exit against the New York Rangers and it wasn’t immediately clear why he left.
Head coach Mike Sullivan stated that Pettersson will be out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
The Penguins defense is going to run a little thin as the season winds down, and it’ll be up to the rest of the team to step up with these key absences.
