Casey DeSmith has been chosen as the Pittsburgh Penguins starting goalie for the third straight game.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have nine games remaining in the 2022-23 regular season and each one will be more important than the previous.
Along with the final stretch of the season has come big questions surrounding who the Penguins’ starting goalie should be.
Casey DeSmith has made a great case for himself with a .918 save percentage and seven wins since the start of February.
Tristan Jarry meanwhile has not only struggled to stay healthy, but has been an inconsistent goalie at best when he plays.
Thanks to these factors, it looks like DeSmith has earned the starting job for the time being.
Head coach Mike Sullivan announced that DeSmith will start in goal against the Detroit Red Wings, his third straight start.
Jarry missed the game against the Dallas Stars due to another lower-body injury and then served as backup against the Washington Capitals.
In those games, DeSmith made 30 and 31 saves respectively, showing that he has what it takes to take the helm.
This is likely not a permanent change for the Penguins, but at this point in the season, DeSmith gives the Penguins exactly what they need: a better chance of winning.
Sullivan said that DeSmith is deserving of the opportunity and everyone believes he’s played well in his recent games.
