There are no names that shouldn't be considered as the next Pittsburgh Penguins general manager.
When it comes to Fenway Sports Group’s general manager search for the Pittsburgh Penguins, there is likely going to be no stone unturned.
Anyone who has even the slightest interest in running a hockey team is likely going to be on the Penguins’ radar.
Both within and outside the world of hockey, FSG is still compiling their list of options and a new name has risen as a possibility.
According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Marc Bergevin is a name that could be getting a call.
Bergevin is currently the senior advisor to the general manager with the Los Angeles Kings and works under vice president and GM Rob Blake.
Before getting the LA, Bergevin was the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens from 2012 to 2021.
Under his control, the Canadiens reached the NHL’s postseason six times, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in Bergevin’s last year with the team.
Before acquiring jobs in NHL front offices, Bergevin played 20 seasons and over 1,100 games as a journeyman defenseman.
Near the end of his playing career, Bergevin played three separate stints with the Penguins from December of 2000 to March of 2004.
While FSG is casting a wide net, it wouldn’t be a shock to see them go towards someone who has general manager experience like Bergevin.
A first-time GM is also very possible, but a safer bet is someone who has done the job before.
The Penguins aren't the only team in search of a new general manager, and Bergevin has the chance of becoming a hot commodity across the NHL.
