Player Breakdown:
Quentin Musty should be talked about more when it comes to this year’ elite offensive class. A former first overall pick in the 2021 OHL draft, Musty’s faced high expectations and succeeded in two seasons of junior hockey. After adjusting to play during his first season, he exploded offensively this past season.
Musty brings a little bit of everything to the attack. He’s a large body at 6’2, loves leading the offensive charge as the puck carrier, passes extremely well, and has a professional release on his shot. When he’s on his game, he’s a leader on the ice and an engine for your team’s offense.
The best part of Musty’s game is his hands. He has one of the smoothest set of hands in this year’s draft, and puts them to use in a variety of ways. He can stick handle around anyone, he has the finesse to elevate passes over defender’s sticks, and he has the subtlety to curl and reposition his stick angle before shooting.
There is a lot to love about Musty’s offensive game, and it’s hard to doubt his top six potential when he puts it all together.
What Needs to Improve:
The biggest knock on Musty is that for as tenacious as he is on offense, he tends to disappear in the defensive zone. No one is drafting Musty to be a shut down forward, but his low engagement in his own end is concerning.
He’s shown flashes of physicality and puck hunting, but it’s far from a consistent part of his game. He needs to show that he can bring the same determination to a 200-foot game as he does when the puck is on his stick, and he will certainly be a top six player in the NHL.
The other concern about Musty’s game, as his defensive concerns also display, is a general inconsistency to his game. He is one of the most gifted players available, but there are times where he seems either disinterested or a step behind the play. The talent is undeniable, but whether he will adapt to the speed of the game at the next level or not remains in question.
NHL Player Comparison: James Neal
NHL ETA: 2025-26
Musty is a player that could be in the NHL sooner than some of his peers in this draft class, despite being a prospect expected to go between picks 15 and 32 in the first round. His offensive toolkit and vision on the ice will carry him through to the next level, provided his effort improves in the defensive zone as well.
