Fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins are spoiled, but they know what it takes to win and aren't seeing it from the team.
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off of an impressive comeback victory against the worst team in the NHL, but that doesn’t make everything sunshine and rainbows for the fan base.
Heading into the trade deadline, the Penguins had obvious flaws that needed attention; the bottom-six was horrid, there were growing concerns with goaltending, and the defense needed a boost.
While general manager Ron Hextall addressed the issues, he didn’t do much to fix them.
With multiple lengthy losing skids on the season, a postseason streak on the line, and a front office seemingly unwilling to make changes, fans of the Penguins have grown restless.
The crowd at PPG Paints Arena has spoken out on multiple occasions; first came when the Penguins were getting steamrolled by the Edmonton Oilers.
There were multiple chants of ‘fire Hextall’ from the 18,000+ fans; and before their comeback against the Columbus Blue Jackets, there was a smattering of similar chants.
Penguins’ fans are spoiled, most of them will probably admit that, but they at least know what it takes to win, and there is a high standard for the hockey club.
When the team isn’t meeting the standard, and performing well below what is expected, there will be outbursts like that.
Jeff Marek asked on Twitter which NHL fan bases are currently the angriest, and while there were plenty of Philadelphia Flyers responses (and rightfully so), Pittsburgh had a healthy amount.
Fans in Pittsburgh expect more than what they’ve gotten this year; they expect more from the players, management, and ownership, which has become its own hot button issue.
Penguins fans might not be the angriest group in the NHL right now, but they’re certainly up there and the heat is mostly warranted.
