Radim Zohorna Making Strong Case for Penguins Roster

The Pittsburgh Penguins might have a tough decision to make when it comes to Radim Zohorna's role.

Erik Karlsson discusses the Pittsburgh Penguins top power play unit, and how that group is looking to find an identity early in the preseason.

When the Pittsburgh Penguins entered training camp ahead of the 2023-24 season, they brought upon a ton of options to fill out their bottom six forward group.

New president and general manager Kyle Dubas supplied the Penguins with numerous options to create a vastly improved group from last year.

While newcomers and prospects have their fair share of chances to make noise, it’s a returning name that has raised quite a few eyebrows.

Radim Zohorna has impressed just about everyone through the first few days of training camp and couple of preseason games.

At 6-foot-6, he’s hard to miss on the ice, but he has been utilizing his size and skill to force his name into the conversation for an NHL roster spot.

With three points through a pair of preseason games, Zohorna is setting himself apart from the group of bubble players he is fighting for a role with.

Head coach Mike Sullivan has been just as impressed with Zohorna’s growth since returning to the Penguins organization.

“I think you guys can see his offensive instincts,” Sullivan said. “For a big man, he handles the puck really well. He has the ability to play center and the wing.”

Sullivan has preached for a number of years that being able to jump between positions and spots in the lineup is important for the team.

Zohorna being a useful skater at center or the wing should give him another advantage in fighting for a role.

While Zohorna’s spot in the lineup still isn’t guaranteed, he’s right in the thick of the battle and making a great case to reach the NHL again.

“I think he’s performed really well,” Sullivan said. “We’ll watch him here moving forward, but he’s certainly a guy that is battling for a roster spot, and he’s right there.”

When teams enter training camps, they usually have an idea of a roster in mind; Zohorna is making a name for himself and forcing the Penguins to really think about his spot.
