The Pittsburgh Penguins came away from their trip to the desert empty-handed.
The Pittsburgh Penguins departed for their road trip a few days early last week. The conversation surrounding the team was optimistic following a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Kraken on home ice.
The conversation has since changed following two losses in which the Penguins weaknesses became overwhelming. It culminated with an embarrassing own goal that made its' rounds throughout the hockey world and shut the door on the Penguins comeback hopes in Arizona.
Kyle Dubas now sits in a precarious position. He's been patient with the Penguins, publicly giving them until the All-Star break before making any drastic changes. After amassing a 9-3-1 record through the end of December and into January, they've lost four of their last five games (1-2-2).
They are now two games shy of that unofficial marker and the Penguins still sit seventh in the Metropolitan division and outside of a playoff position. Their defensive play has been underwhelming to say the least and the power play has gone ice cold once again.
Dubas wanted to wait until the All-Star break to full evaluate what this team is. With only three games in the next 17 days and only 45 days until the trade deadline, that determination must be made soon.
He may not make any moves in the immediate future, but the clock is ticking and Dubas is running out of time to fix the Penguins issues and change the trajectory of the season.
