Team defense was key in the Pittsburgh Penguins victory over the Washington Capitals.
In the biggest game of the season so far, the Pittsburgh Penguins grabbed a pivotal win over the Washington Capitals to close out their successful four-game road trip.
It wasn't a dominant performance, but the Penguins played a near-perfect road game against their biggest rivals. The Capitals outplayed the Penguins in the opening frame and registered eight high-danger scoring chances on nine shots on goal.
Fortunately, Alex Nedeljkovic continued the brilliance he showed earlier in the week against New Jersey, and the Penguins took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. From that point forward, the Penguins shut down the Capitals and their dominant power play the rest of the way.
The Capitals generated only four high-danger scoring chances in the second and third periods combined, three of which came on a nearly full two-minute 5-on-3 power play.
The Penguins closed out their four-game road trip with a 3-0-1 record and now sit two points behind two different playoff positions.
