Depths signings by the Pittsburgh Penguins have added a level of competition for top tier prospects. It’s no secret that Erik Karlsson wants traded away from the San Jose Sharks; the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes have been the two teams lurking around the most as possible partners. As the days have turned into weeks waiting for a final deal, it has been reported by Rob Rossi of the Athletic [https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/pittsburgh-penguins/news/erik-karlsson-prefer-play-pittsburgh-penguins] that Karlsson would prefer a deal to the Penguins. Karlsson doesn’t have all of the say in his move, but he does carry some weight and the would have an easier time getting a deal done. There is still a chance, however, that Karlsson ends up not getting moved and stays in San Jose for at least the start of the 2023-24 season. According to Frank Serevalli [https://www.sportsnet.ca/590/fan-drive-time/the-siakam-situation-the-latest-in-leaf-land-and-karlsson/] of Daily Faceoff, the Sharks are still looking for a huge return for the reigning Norris Trophy winner. Serevalli says he isn’t convinced the deal will happen thanks to the Shark’s ask; the Sharks want a lot and the Penguins don’t have much to offer and don’t have the cap space. Teams are also unwilling to meet the Sharks’ demands; Karlsson is a star player in the NHL, there’s no doubt, but he brings a questionable injury history and doesn’t bring a ton of defense despite that being the name of his position. Karlsson is known for his offense and a 100-point campaign speaks for itself, but teams like the Penguins want certainty if they are going to pay an arm and a leg. It might be a waiting game at this point as every team has their price and are willing to see who bends first.
